Proud to be part of the Opening Ceremony
On the eve of the Commonwealth Games, Sue Grant, a volunteer cast member at the ´ºÓêÖ±²¥ 2022 Opening Ceremony, writes about her excitement and pride about being involved in the ceremony...
You could say my wish is going to be granted tomorrow evening!
On 28 July, I will proudly perform at the ´ºÓêÖ±²¥ 2022 Opening Ceremony – I can’t believe I’m actually writing these words.
I’m one of 2,000 people who successfully applied to be part of the volunteer cast at the Alexander Stadium.
For me this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to say I was involved in the biggest event this city has ever hosted and definitely something to show and tell my grandchildren!
This journey began when I saw an advert requesting for people to volunteer through one of the city council’s internal bulletins earlier this year.
My ‘day job’ is a Senior Practitioner in the Adult Safeguarding Team at ´ºÓêÖ±²¥ City Council so this a world away from my normal working life. Although, I’ve always had a passion for amateur dramatics and often lead in the team Christmas quizzes and office away days.
I went to an audition at Edgbaston and two months later I was offered a role in the Opening Ceremony. To say I was over the moon is an understatement!
I can’t give too much away about the ceremony, but I will divulge that I’m part of the floats team. We’ve been rehearsing at a private venue and I can tell you it’s been hard going at times. I’ve attended 15 sessions which can last up to five hours at a time!
I’m just so excited – I hope you all enjoy the show!
